Message from Dr. Amit Garg
“Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus” has gained the distinction of epidemic proportions and has evolved as one of the most serious public health problems in the 21st century. Today, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is one of the non communicable disease which is rapidly growing with nearly 300 million people affected worldwide and 450 million people predicted to have been afflicted with the disease by 2030. Even more alarming is the fact that obesity is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with a rising prevalence in adults and children. Today, half of the population is overweight and roughly 170 million have severe obesity (50 Kg or more than normal weight). Morbid Obesity is an extreme health Hazard that impacts your medical, physical, psychological and metabolic well – being. It affects nearly every organ in the body and produces serious medical conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, sleep apnea and degenerative joint disease. While medical options such as weight loss programs, diets and drug therapies are ever present and increasing, only 3-7% of patients with a diagnosis of obesity are able to achieve effective and consistent weight loss.
Obesity is the second most common preventable cause of death after smoking. That is why we, at Fortis, consider Morbid Obesity to be the treatable cause of an array of preventable life threatening diseases. At our center, we are focused on addressing obesity with modern strategies according to the age, weight, BMI, food habits, social habits and diabetic status of the individual.
“Bariatric and metabolic surgery” has been recently gaining importance as a safe and effective treatment to combat this deadly disease. Reports from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and its umbrella organizations comprising of more than 200 national diabetes association’s from more than 160 countries, indicate that surgical intervention prevents progressive complications of diabetes, and curtails expenses incurred by the medical care system.
